serein
for several music boxes
serein (noun)
'mist or fine rain falling from an apparently clear sky'
SEREIN is written for a non-specific number of music boxes playing the same roll. The piece may be realised either live (using several similarly-tuned music boxes) or by multitrack recording a single music box.
The lever should be turned at a steady rate throughout (until the rit.), the player aiming for 60bpm but, importantly, the parts should be allowed to drift out of sync.
After the opening chord the strands of music will gradually drift away from each other until the end, where (if performed live) each player should pause waiting for the final strand to conclude.
